After riots broke out due to claims that the headmaster of the Obuasi Senior High Technical School in the Ashanti Region buried a child’s corpse on the school grounds, the school has been closed indefinitely.
We have learned from the Obuasi Municipal Directorate of Education that the decision to close the school was prompted by students assaulting the headmaster and destroying school property.
Reports state that the incident took place between 12:30 and 1:30 a.m. after a student said he observed the headmaster’s car parked near the school’s garbage dump.
Allegedly, the corpse of a baby between five and six months old was found after the student reportedly sounded an alarm, drawing additional students to the location.
The students later confronted the headmaster, alleging that he had buried the infant on the property. According to reports, the students allegedly attacked the headmaster and damaged portions of the school’s property, escalating the altercation into violence.
The headmaster suffered numerous wounds and is currently being treated at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi.
The Ministry of Education, in the interim, has instructed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to launch an immediate investigation into the occurrence and to guarantee that any guilty parties are punished by the law.
The ministry condemned the violence in a statement released on Wednesday, August 5, and signed by Dr. Clement Apaak, the Deputy Minister for Education, describing the attack on the headmaster and the destruction of school property as criminal and unacceptable.
According to the ministry, any disciplinary actions and investigations must abide by Ghana’s education sector rules and regulations.
In addition, it advised all parties to maintain composure and give the relevant agencies the time to determine the truth behind the event.
According to reports, six individuals have been taken into custody in connection with the event. Since then, the police have started looking into the occurrence.
