Following the death of Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II on July 11, 2026, thousands of sympathisers, traditional leaders, and well-wishers have gathered in Yendi, the Kingdom of Dagbon’s historic capital, for the installation of a Regent.
As mourners and dignitaries continue to arrive for the historic ceremony, the community has come to life with traditional drumming, ceremonial musket firing, and cultural displays by local warriors.
Some traditional rituals are being carried out in private in advance of the Regent’s formal installation, even though public events are still taking place.
Lamashegu Naa Alhaji Mohammed Iddrisu, the Grounds Committee Chairman, told the media that all preparations had been made for a calm and pleasant ceremony.
He stated that the installation will take place in two stages, with a private customary ceremony preceding the Regent’s official presentation to the public.
He claims that throughout the event, suitable preparations have been made to preserve law and order.
Meanwhile, the Municipality’s Sugri Muniru, chief executive, promised citizens and visitors that it is still safe and well-equipped to host the event.
In order to guarantee the calm conduct of the installation and give security, he revealed that over 600 security officers have been stationed across Yendi.
The Regent’s installation is part of Dagbon’s traditional succession process after the Ya-Na’s death and is anticipated to pave the way for the kingdom’s traditional transition rituals.
