In Thursday’s heats in Glasgow, Ghana’s Evonne Britton set a season best time of 12.78 seconds, earning her a spot in the women’s 100m hurdles final at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
In the first heat, which was won by Tobi Amusan of Nigeria in a crushing 12.19 seconds, Britton placed fourth. Her time was sufficient to reserve one of the fastest qualifying positions for the final.
Later on Thursday, Evonne Britton will go back on the track to compete against Amusan, who is the overwhelming favorite to win gold and the fastest qualifier from the heats.
Britton’s accomplishment extends what has been a promising season. She made it to the final of the African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra in May, finishing fourth with a time of 13.08 seconds despite having come through a very challenging field.
Her 12.78s performance in Glasgow is further proof of the progress the former University of Arkansas athlete has made throughout the year, which has been consistent.
Amusan, the reigning global champion and world record holder, who seemed at ease as she coasted into the final with the fastest time of the morning, is standing between Britton and a position on the podium.
Britton will be aiming to improve on her season’s greatest performance in the women’s 100-meter hurdles as she pursues what would be Ghana’s first-ever Commonwealth Games medal.
