In the championship game in Istanbul, Aston Villa defeated Freiburg 3-0 to win the Europa League.
The victory was greeted with jubilation by Villa supporters, both at the Besiktas Stadium and at home, as the competition’s king, Unai Emery, held the trophy for the fifth time.
The gorgeous, outstanding first-half goals scored by Youri Tielemans and Emi Buendia were appropriate for the occasion, as those fans had been waiting 44 years for their team to play in another European final.
With textbook technique, Tielemans volleyed Morgan Rogers’ cross into the box, sending it screaming into the bottom corner. A few moments later, Buendia made a beautiful bending attempt from the edge of the box, which curled into the top corner.

Freiburg was unsure of what had struck them. In the previous 41 minutes, there had hardly been an opportunity. At 58 minutes, it was almost over when Morgan Rogers slid in a Buendia cross at the near post. A masterclass given by Villa and Emery. The Bundesliga team was defeated.
More goals should have been scored. Tielemans’s excellent pass played Buendia in, and he then struck the ball into the side-netting after Amadou Onana headed John McGinn’s corner against the back post.
However, Villa’s supremacy was never questioned once they seized the lead. Freiburg’s midfield was controlled by captain John McGinn, who rarely posed a threat. Emi Martinez made an incredible save to match Johan Manzambi’s close-range header, even before the offside flag was raised.

Aston Villa’s season and performance were fantastic. With a confirmed top-five finish in the Premier League, which has already earned Champions League football for the following year, a European trophy to match.
On the big screen, Emery’s painstaking transformation of Aston Villa over the previous three and a half years is beautifully showcased, and he once again triumphs in the contest he has mastered.
