On Tuesday, April 14, officers from the Economic and Organised Crime Office are said to have raided the Atonsu house of former Asokwa Member of Parliament and former Managing Director of GIHOC Distilleries Company Limited, Maxwell Kofi Jumah.
The officers conducted the operation without Mr. Jumah present, but Paul Yandoh, the Ashanti Regional Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party, said that the officers showed paperwork proving they had the right to search the premises.
“They have taken everything from this house, including all the keys. All they brought was a sheet with the order that they must search Honourable Kofi Jumah’s home in accordance with the instructions given by the EOCO chief,” he stated.
According to Mr. Yandoh, the police took a number of things during the operation.
“They took all the keys to this house, then his laptop, and then all the papers in his room,” he said.
“So I asked him, why are you sending the keys?” he said, questioning the officers’ decision to confiscate the keys from the house. They have to take it, he said. I asked, “Has he stolen anybody’s building or whatever?” They were simply not prepared to respond.
Additionally, he slammed the way the procedure was carried out, implying that conventional protocols were ignored.
“What has become of the customary practice of asking folks for papers or other items? What has become of that? he inquired.
According to Mr. Yandoh, the incident was politically driven.
“I’d refer to it as political persecution or a political witch hunt.” In my opinion, it’s not the best course of action. You shouldn’t put the other through this sort of criminal assault simply because the government changes, he said.
He cautioned that these actions may have a larger impact on the nation’s political climate.
“And things will change. Without a doubt, things will shift. Furthermore, no one should be held accountable for following suit when it shifts. Is it now illegal for serving one’s nation? he questioned.
On the subject, there hasn’t been an immediate reaction from EOCO.
