The President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has announced that the Akosombo Hydroelectric Dam is operating at full capacity again after recent interruptions resulting from a fire at the Volta River Authority (VRA) switchyard control room. Addressing the 2026 May Day parade held at the Jackson Park in Koforidua on Friday, 1st May 2026, President Mahama said engineers had been able to resolved the challenges arising out of the fire incident at the VRA Electricity Generation Station.

“I visited the VRA Electricity Generation Station in Akosombo in the Eastern Region yesterday to witness the aftermath of the terrible fire at the switchyard control room.” According to him, the engineers from the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) and the VRA, worked tirelessly to restore power despite public concerns.

The six turbines at the Akosombo Generating Station had been successfully brought back online by the engineers who managed to bypass the destroyed control system. “I understand some of you are concerned about the disruption to the supply of electricity occasioned by the Akosombo fire, however I bring you the good news that by working to bypass the bent-out control room, GRIDCo and VRA engineers have successfully restarted all the six turbines at the Akosombo Generating Station.”

He added that as of the previous evening, the dam had resumed full power generating capacity. The ceremony provided the President with an opportunity to applaud the engineers, describing their efforts as a demonstration of the value and resilience of Ghanaian workers. “This Engineers demonstrate by their actions the inherent strength, resilience and value of Ghanaian workers as our country’s greatest resource.”
