Following a planned release from the Weija Dam, hundreds of residences in portions of Accra’s Weija have been submerged, leaving thousands of people trapped and many forced to leave their homes.

Following Ghana Water Limited’s (GWL) confirmation that it had begun emptying extra water from the dam because of increasing water levels that had gone above safe operating limits, there were concerns about a possible overflow. This flooding occurs after that.

According to a statement released on May 27, 2026, the utility company stated that the dam’s water level had exceeded 48 feet, requiring the opening of all spill gates as a precaution to safeguard the facility’s structural integrity.

When large inflows put pressure on the dam’s ability to hold water during periods of heavy rain, GWL stated that the regulated spilling is a common safety measure that is used.

With water filling dwellings and roads, many locals are having trouble salvaging their possessions while others have been forced to leave their homes due to the flooding that has occurred in the neighboring communities.

Authorities are expected to step up emergency response efforts as they assess the damage and help those impacted.
