Based on a request from the government to extend time to solve wage and work condition issues, the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana has called off its national strike.
After a meeting of the National Executive Committee (EXECO) on 17 March, EXECO decided to suspend the industrial action for two weeks in order to allow for continued discussions.
Executive Secretary of CLOGSAG, Isaac Bampoe Addo, stated at a press conference that the decision to suspend the national strike was made in response to a government request for fourteen days’ notice in which to solve the issue of pay and working conditions.
“The EXECO of CLOGSAG has taken the government’s fourteen days’ notice into consideration regarding the issues associated with our pay system/work conditions,” he said. “EXECO has called off the national strike and will instruct our members to report to work by 24 March 2026.”
The group’s statement went on to say that the temporary suspension was done to facilitate a peaceful resolution to the current dispute concerning the implementation of a memorandum of understanding regarding a unique salary structure for the association’s members.
The statement stated, “On March 17, 2026, the EXECO examined the appeal by Government to call off the nationwide strike action and allow Government fourteen (14) days to come to an amicable resolution of the issues with the Salary Structure and Conditions of Service of members of CLOGSAG.” “For this reason, the National Strike has been halted by EXECO.”
As a result, the organization has instructed all of its members nationwide to resume working from Tuesday, March 24, 2026, thereby reinstating public services that had been disrupted by the strike since its commencement on March 9.
The statement continued, “All members of CLOGSAG are to report to work by Tuesday, 24th March, 2026.”
Although the strike was called off, CLOGSAG said it would not appear before the National Labour Commission, claiming that legal proceedings against the Commission were still ongoing.
As talks between the government and the organization about the remaining challenges continue, the initiative is anticipated to relieve strain on the provision of public services.
