The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has given traders occupying the street of Lapaz a final ultimatum to immediately desist from selling their wares on the street or be forced out by security personnel.
A delegation from AMA which included the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Mrs. Linda Ocloo, the Mayor of Accra, Mr Michael Nii Kpakpo Allotey, and the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Okaikwei North Municipal Assembly, Mr Christian Tetteh Badger on Thursday paid a visit to the area to implement new initiatives to de-congest the area.
It has been warned that effective Monday, May 12, stern punitive measures would be applied against any trader who failed to abandon the street within the specified seven day ultimatum given for them to cease operations. As interim measures, some of the affected traders have been relocated to other nearest market areas such as Achimota, Kisseman and Abeka while sustainable arrangements are in place to cater for other vendors and ensure fairness.
Speaking to journalists on the decongestion exercise, the MCE, Mr Christian Tetteh Badger said “this de-congesting exercise is geared towards restoring law and order and to ensure free flow of vehicles and movement of people. ” Mr Badger said it had held series of meeting with market women leaders, including the market queen and to urge them to submit the listing for space allocations.
“We are currently putting in place engineering measures, task force measures to ensure rigid and strict compliance to enable the free and uninterrupted movement of our vehicles and the people”, he added.
