Due to accounts that the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital’s (KATH) Accident and Emergency Centre temporarily ceased accepting new patients, the Minister of Health has called Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo, the institution’s Chief Executive Officer.
The Ministry stated in a letter dated June 3, 2026, and signed by Desmond Boateng, Chief Director of the Health Ministry, that it had noticed a statement making the rounds on social media claiming that KATH’s Accident and Emergency Centre was at it’s full capacity and unable to accept new patients.
The Ministry also cited comments allegedly made on Channel One TV by the hospital’s Head of Public Relations, which affirmed management’s stance that the center was unable to take more patients.
The Ministry said that the ruling goes against President John Dramani Mahama’s order prohibiting hospitals from refusing emergency cases.
The letter instructed the KATH CEO to appear before the Minister of Health by noon on Thursday, June 4, 2026, to explain why he should not face disciplinary action for purportedly defying the President’s order.
“This is in contradiction of a clear instruction given to hospitals by His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Ghana, not to reject emergency cases,” the Ministry said.
The Ministry stated that it anticipates the full cooperation of KATH management as it examines the situation.
The development comes amid increasing public alarm over allegations that the Accident and Emergency Center at the hospital was at maximum capacity and unable to accept new patients.
However, on June 3rd, KATH restarted emergency admissions, with officials stating that the institution had seen a little improvement in bed availability.
The Accident and Emergency Centre of the hospital, which was intended to house 37 patients, is currently exceeding its capacity, prompting worries about its capacity to deliver safe treatment to critically ill patients.
