Severe floods have occurred in a number of places in Accra as a result of heavy rains that started late on Sunday, June 28, and lasted until the morning of Monday, June 29, 2026. This has caused traffic disruption, submerged major roadways, and left commuters stranded.
There were reports of flooding in low-lying places and along major roads, forcing some drivers to abandon flooded paths and causing traffic to crawl through underwater portions.
The Monday morning rush hour was severely impacted by the hours-long downpour, which left citizens battling with traffic congestion and waterlogged roadways to get to school and work.
According to residents and road users, portions of the N1 Highway, Apenkwa to Tesano, the Accra-Kasoa stretch, Weija, Mallam, Achimota, Spintex, Atomic in Madina, Kaneshie, Darkuman Junction, parts of the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, and other surrounding communities are among the impacted areas.
Some stores and houses in areas susceptible to flooding were also submerged, forcing residents to relocate their possessions to higher ground as water levels increased.
In flood-prone areas, inhabitants are being urged to stay alert and move to higher ground if required, while drivers and commuters have been advised to refrain from traveling through flooded roadways.
During periods of strong rain, Accra experiences persistent floods, which are frequently attributed to inefficient drainage systems, unchecked waste disposal, and quick urbanisation.
More updates are anticipated to be published, and emergency personnel are expected to evaluate the whole degree of the damage.
