The evacuation of all Ghanaian nationals who asked the government for help in leaving Israel has been successfully completed, according to Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
On his official Facebook page, Ablakwa confirmed the safe arrival of the evacuees in Ghana on Thursday, March 19, 2026.
“We have been successful in the evacuation in Israel. “We have successfully evacuated all Ghanaians who requested the assistance of the Government of Ghana out of Israel and back home,” he stated.
In addition to other personnel, the evacuation included a few members of the diplomatic corps at Ghana’s embassy in Tel Aviv.
Nonetheless, the Minister said that not all embassy employees were withdrawn; a skeleton team was left behind to provide vital consular services to Ghanaians still in Israel.
“Government has decided to leave behind a few key personnel for essential consular support,” Ablakwa observed.
Given that the evacuation route passed through Egypt, which is in line with the regional logistics of evacuating people from Israel during the ongoing conflict involving Israel, the United States, and Iran, the Foreign Affairs Minister expressed gratitude to the authorities in both Israel and Egypt for their assistance in making the operation possible.
The returning Ghanaians were greeted with open arms by Ablakwa, who said they had landed in Ghana “a few hours ago.”
The successful evacuation occurs as the Middle East is still on edge in the wake of rising tensions in the Israel-US-Iran conflict, which has led a number of governments around the world to start evacuating their citizens from the area as a precaution.
The government of President John Mahama had previously expressed its intention to give the safety of Ghanaians living outside the country top priority during the conflict.
During his Resetting Ghana Tour in the Bono Region earlier this week, President Mahama said that he believes Ghana can withstand the external pressures brought about by the geopolitical tensions.
Leaving the door open for potential future operations should the circumstances in the area worsen, Ablakwa vowed that “the Mahama Administration will continue with safe evacuation efforts as we prioritize the welfare of all Ghanaians.”
