Rune Skinnebach, EU ambassador to Ghana, reasserts bloc willingness to enhance cooperation on illegal mining in Ghana “Galamsey”.
He however said that the European Union is still ready to offer further assistance even though a number of initiatives for cooperative purposes have already been launched by the EU with Ghana, in the area of defense and security as well as development Cooperation.
The EU Envoy was speaking on Wednesday after he was led to a number of Mining sites in Kyebi the Eastern Region to inspect personally, some effects of illegal activities on the mined grounds.
He re–Affirmed the need to accelerate actions toward promoting ethical mining while tightening enforcement mechanisms to guard against illegal activities.
“I will again say this very clearly, We are quite open to cooperate with the EU on the issue of galamsey. We are already involved in some efforts to tackle illegal mining in Ghana through different programs and we are prepared to increase this, but we shall only do it together with the Ghanaian government,”.
