Ghana has been presented with a full apology from Kwame Kpekpena, acting managing director of the Electricity Company of Ghana, for the recent random outages that affected the homes and businesses nationwide. In a statement on the issue, made at a press conference in Accra on Monday, 20th April, Kpekpena made an admission of the discomfort caused by the continuous fluctuation in power supply.
“We sincerely apologize to every Ghanaian customer who has been subjected to intermittent and inconvenient power outages. Be assured that we have listened and that fixing these outages has become our number one priority”, he stated. The acting managing director expressed the assurance of quick action to bring stability back into the system by ECG, the electrical service provider in the country.
Mr Kpekpena explained that a clear strategy has been developed by ECG, and outlined as one that is going to help achieve the corporation’s objective in fixing the issues with the network and improving stability. “We also recognize that our responsiveness and our communications, at times, haven’t been what they should be.
This is not acceptable. We’ve been working hard on addressing those gaps”, Kpekpena said. He also admitted that ‘several’ parts of the ECG network have gone over the years without enough development or refurbishment. It is such areas that, “have been vulnerable to intermittent outages and low voltages”, he pointed out.
“The issues that we’re facing are real, and we acknowledge they’re complex, and in some cases reflect decades of underinvestment. We are not resting on our laurels in any way”, Kpekpena assured the public, adding that “We are putting all of our efforts behind implementation of our plan and on schedule”. Kpekpena assures that the company will remain open to all with updates on the process of restoring a consistent electricity service across Ghana.
