The Baba Yara Sports Stadium is ready to host the 2026 Democracy Cup as Ghana’s two biggest clubs, Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak, clash on Friday, August 28, 2026.
The third edition of the Democracy Cup will kick off at 4:00 p.m. and is being organized by the Parliament of Ghana to commemorate 32 years of parliamentary democracy in Ghana.
The Ghana Football Association has officially sanctioned the match.The fixture carries extra significance as the head-to-head is tied. Asante Kotoko won the inaugural edition in 2024, while Hearts of Oak bounced back to win in 2025.
Friday’s winner will take the lead in the competition’s history.Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, who conceived the Democracy Cup as a platform to promote national unity through football, has already received the trophy ahead of the clash.
Speaking at the ceremony, he urged fans to see the game beyond rivalry.”A football match, like an election, has winners and losers, but the bond of our nation must never break at the final whistle,” he said.
For Kotoko, the match is a home fixture and head coach Eric Tinkler says his side is ready to put up a good performance in front of their fans.Match officials have also been confirmed.
Referee Charles Bulu will officiate the game, assisted by Seth Abletor and Richard Nartey, with Julian Nunoo as fourth referee. James Odoom will serve as Match Commissioner.The stage is set at Baba Yara for another Super Clash – this time with democracy at the centre.
