Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, is now in Latvia. He’s there for two days to figure out what really happened with Ghanaian student Nana Agyei Ahyia’s passing and to make sure there’s justice. Ablakwa mentioned in a Facebook post that his visit was to keep a promise he made to Ghanaians. He wanted to look into what happened surrounding Ahyia’s death at Riga Technical University.

Ablakwa sat down with Latvia’s Foreign Minister, Baiba Braže. She gave him her word that the Latvian government would cooperate in every way to find out what really happened and make sure justice is served. Ablakwa made the trip with a group of six other people, including some higher-ups, someone good with forensics, and a pathologist.
Two family members of the person who passed away will finally be joining the group in Latvia. They had some problems getting their visas processed on time. Ablakwa set the record straight: the Ministry is footing the entire bill for everyone in the delegation.

He totally dismissed those social media rumors about extortion or fake airline tickets, calling them baseless.
The group will chat with Latvian folks, like those working in the Interior and Education Ministries, and also with the investigators on the case.
The Ministry says it didn’t ask Ahyia’s family for travel money. They made sure to cover all the bills themselves and kept the family informed every step of the way.

Ablakwa once again said that Ghana is serious about looking after its citizens who are living in other countries. He made it clear that the Ministry is really focused on making sure Ahyia gets justice.
