Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been inducted into the Church of the Province of West Africa’s Anglican Diocese of Koforidua as an Honorary Lay Canon.
Following what the former president described as a period of prayerful consideration, the event was held at the St. Peter Anglican Cathedral on Passion Sunday, the fifth Sunday in Lent.
The honor acknowledges Mr. Akufo-Addos’s contributions to public service and social justice and assigns him responsibilities in areas such as health, evangelism, education, investment, tourism, and hospitality within the Anglican Communion, according to a message posted on social media following the event.

He said that faith and divine providence had led him on his life’s journey while considering the honor. “Throughout my adult life, my experiences and service have been a testimony of God’s love and a vindication of the words of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, as quoted in Matthew 19:26, which says, ‘With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible,'” he stated.
Mr. Akufo-Addo further promised his unwavering dedication to the Church, saying that he will devote his life to service, prayer, and promoting the spread of the Anglican religion both within the diocese and beyond.
“As I always have, I promise to continue to serve the Church, to live a holy life, to pray frequently for God’s blessing on the work of the Church in the world, particularly in this Diocese and the West African Province, and to gladly enter into the succession of those in each generation who have served God through the worship offered in this Cathedral, Diocese, and Province,” he continued.

He thanked the Anglican Diocese of Koforidua, the broader Anglican Communion, the diocesan bishop Felix Odei Annancy, and the officiating clergy for the honor they had given him.
By positioning the former president among other notable lay people acknowledged by the Church for their dedication to promoting its mission and their service to society, the installation elevates him to a position of honor.
