As part of its ongoing effort to maintain uninterrupted healthcare services under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has disbursed over GH¢157 million in claims to healthcare providers throughout Ghana in April 2026.
According to an NHIA Claims Directorate statement released on May 15, 2020, two separate distributions of funds were made. On April 14, a first distribution of GH¢43.7 million was made. The second distribution totalling GH¢113.6 million was completed on April 30.
The NHIA has indicated that some of the disbursements were for unfunded claims which had accummulated since 2019 because of unique, isolated issues preventing the payment of the claims. Others were for vetted claims that were approved by the end of March 2026.
The NHIA said that the timely payment of claims to healthcare providers is part of their commitment to ensuring that continuous healthcare services are available to NHIS subscribers across the country. The NHIA expressed that significant amounts of the funds were paid to private healthcare providers, compared to public and mission health facilities.
Of the total claims disbursed, high-volume healthcare providers accounted for 64 percent of the disbursed claims, while clinics and health centres received 23 percent. Nine percent of the claims were paid to community-based health planning and services (CHPS) compounds, and four percent were paid to other types of specialty healthcare providers.
The NHIA has stated that it will continue to work to resolve all outstanding arrears and strengthen the financial stability of health facilities throughout the country.
