Peter Anti, the Executive Director of the Institute for Education Studies, has condemned the government’s plan to hire 7,000 teachers, saying that it demonstrates inadequate preparation and a short-term focus in the education industry.
The government defended the recruiting process before he made his statements. Despite admitting that as many as 50,000 additional teachers might be required, the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has insisted that budgetary restrictions prevent the government from hiring more.
Additionally, the Minister has stated that the present recruitment process was carried out transparently after receiving approval from the Ministry of Finance.
Mr. Anti stated on Citi Eyewitness News on Tuesday that the regular occurrence of mass recruitment drives points to deficiencies in workforce planning and policy consistency.
“It indicates that our teacher training and recruitment practices have not been strategic.” We have not been able to plan ahead in terms of how we will address the gaps that will arise in our educational system over the long run, he added.
According to Mr. Anti, recruitment efforts are frequently impacted by short-term political considerations rather than well-planned strategies to address the industry’s long-term needs.
“What we have been doing is that political game of mass recruitment within a particular period and to satisfy a certain kind of promise or whatever it is or political game that we normally do,” he noted.
