Ghanaian football is in mourning over the death of Dominic Frimpong, a member of the Berekum Chelsea squad, from gunshot injuries he sustained during a robbery on the team bus.
The team vehicle was reportedly ambushed by armed guys along the Goaso-Bibiani road, near Ahyiresu in the Ahafo Region, who shut the road and opened fire. Both the players and the officials had to find shelter in adjacent shrubs.
After sustaining severe gunshot wounds to the head, Frimpong was brought to the Bibiani Government Hospital for immediate care, the Club has verified. He was about to be transported to a better hospital when he passed away.
On a loan from Aduana FC that will last until the end of the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season, the player joined Berekum Chelsea in January.
Frimpong had established himself as one of the team’s up-and-coming players during the current season, having scored two goals in 13 league games. His performances had made him a possible standout for the team before his untimely demise.
The occurrence has caused a stir in the Ghanaian football community, raising serious concerns about the security of teams traveling around the country. It is expected that the attack will be the subject of a more thorough police investigation.
