President John Dramani Mahama has stated that $2 billion has been acquired to fund the construction of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway, assuring that once construction begins, finance will not cause the project to be postponed.
According to the President, the money, which comes from taxpayers, has been put into a special account at the Bank of Ghana to ensure that the contractor is paid quickly during the course of the project.
In order to prevent building delays, he declared that the government plans to pay certificates provided by the contractor on schedule.
On Monday, September 14, at the project’s handover ceremony for the 175.6-kilometer cleared right-of-way, President Mahama declared, “This is our money. We have not borrowed money from anywhere. The taxpayers’ money is this.
Separately, Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has promised that the whole sum necessary for the project will be accessible by December 31, 2026, with the government insisting that no borrowing will be done to pay for the expressway.
President Mahama has also directed that the Minister of Roads and Highways appoint the Engineers Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces as a primary subcontractor to the main contractor.
