The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs has declared a contraflow system for Ayalolo Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) services on three primary corridors into Accra’s Central Business District (CBD).
The agreement, which goes into force on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, will be in effect during rush hours from 6 am to 9 am in the morning and from 4 pm to 8 pm in the evening.
It will cover the Adenta-Accra, Amasaman-Accra, and Kasoa-Accra corridors, which have been recognized as key commuter routes experiencing considerable traffic volumes during rush hours.
Under the new arrangement, authorized Ayalolo buses will be able to travel against the regular flow of traffic in the priority direction by temporarily configuring designated portions of the impacted roadways.
The allocated contra-flow lanes will be exclusively used by Ayalolo BRT services. The roads are off-limits to private vehicles, taxis, commercial vehicles, and tro-tros.
The Ministry said the intervention is part of efforts to improve public transportation, reduce congestion, and provide more dependable mobility for commuters entering and departing the CBD in a statement released on Monday, September 28.
The arrangement is being implemented in partnership with the Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE), the Department of Urban Roads (DUR), and the Ghana Police Service’s Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD).
To ensure adherence to the new agreement, the MTTD will offer traffic control and enforcement support at important locations and main crossings along the impacted roadways.
According to the government, the intervention would improve Ayalolo services’ regularity, reduce travel time, and lessen CBD traffic jams.
Commuters are also expected to use public transportation more frequently, easing the stress caused by the significant number of private automobiles on the road.
Therefore, the Ministry has urged drivers, commercial transport operators, pedestrians, to cooperate with traffic officers and assist in the implementation of the arrangement, businesses and inhabitants along the impacted corridors.
