President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to enhance infrastructure construction in the Savannah Region (SR) to support local economic growth and improve residents’ overall quality of living.
At the Gonjaland Youth Association’s 50th anniversary ceremony, held on April 5, 2015, in Buipe, where he was the special guest of honour, he made this commitment while discussing the theme for the anniversary: “50 Years of Progress: Empowering Gonjaland Youth For the Future.”
As part of his promise to improve education in the SR, he announced that all high schools in the SR will be upgraded to category A status and STEM schools will be established in Tinga and Busunu.
“I believe education is the key to achieving our goals as individuals and communities, and therefore, it is important for us to invest heavily in education in the Savannah Region,” said President Mahama.
He also instructed Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, MP for Yapei-Kusawgu, to obtain a bus for Buipe Senior High School at the request of the Buipe Paramount Chief, Buipewura Abdulai Jinapor II.
Presidential announcements also included the re-commitment to the construction of the Savannah Sports Stadium to encourage sports-related activities in the area.
The Buipe Traditional Area’s Paramount Chief and Vice President of the National House of Chiefs, Buipewura Abdulai Jinapor II, asked for increased government action against the illegal mining occurring along the banks of the Black Volta.
He stated that the traditional authority will be involved in both preservation of the land for future generations and protection of their ancestral heritage.
He made a request for assistance in building the Mpaha Junction-Debre road which has been under negotiation for some time.
The National President of the Gonjaland Youth Association, Alhassan Baba Darison, requested increased government attention to development in Gonjaland though creating new districts and promoting current districts to the status of municipalities.
