President John Mahama’s African health and economic sovereignty project, the Accra Reset, has established a high-level committee on Global Health Architecture and Governance Reform, as announced by the Chancery of the Accra Reset.
The effort will gather 18 international specialists with the mandate of developing “concrete, actionable proposals” to revamp what the organizers describe as an unfair global health structure.
Notable international personalities such as Peter Piot, El Hadj As Sy, Nísia Trindade, and Budi Gunadi Sadikin will co-chair the board.
The panel’s mission is to question a global system that has historically regarded developing nations as “passive takers” rather than independent players, according to a statement from the Accra Reset’s Chancery on Friday, April 3, 2026.
“The panel’s mandate is to develop specific, practical recommendations for restructuring a global health order that has treated governments of the Global South as passive recipients rather than as sovereign actors,” the statement said.
A High-Level Consultative Group, comprised of significant worldwide organizations such as the World Health Organization, World Trade Organization, the Global Fund, Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the International Finance Corporation, will oversee the panel’s work.
The statement stated that the panel will begin its work immediately, with its terms of reference anticipated to be influenced by inputs from platforms such as the United Nations General Assembly and the World Health Assembly.
Michel Sidibé, who served as the former Executive Director of UNAIDS, has been named Special Advisor to the committee and envoy of the co-chairs.
“Mr. Sidibé brings to the position decades of practical involvement with the architecture that the panel is responsible for reforming,” the statement read.
The panel is comprised of a diverse group of industry executives, academics, and legislators from throughout Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America.
