President John Dramani Mahama has declared that Ghana will implement a visa-free system for all African citizens visiting the nation.
Africa Day will be observed when the legislation goes into effect on May 25, 2026.
While Zimbabwe’s President, Emmerson Mnangagwa, was on a state visit, the President made the announcement.
The initiative, he stated, is a component of actions aimed at strengthening Ghana’s position as a center of Pan-Africanism, while also opening up new prospects for tourism and trade within Africa.
The visa-free entry policy will be integrated into a larger e-visa system that President Mahama’s government plans to implement next month, he said.
“I’m also delighted to announce that Ghana will begin a free visa system for all Africans on May 25, 2026, which is when we observe Africa Day. The e-visas for Africans visiting Ghana will be available for free online.
“But we already have a visa-free environment between Ghana and Zimbabwe. You are permitted to visit one another’s nations without requiring a visa. You simply board the aircraft and land in one another’s nation,” he explained.
Additionally, President Mahama stated that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will make greater strides in obtaining more visa waiver agreements for Ghanaian passport holders.
To improve relations, the two nations have also signed 10 Memorandums of Understanding.
