The World Affairs Council of Philadelphia has given the International Statesperson Award to President John Dramani Mahama, making him the first African leader to ever win this prestigious honor.
The council’s top honor, the award, which was established in 1973, recognizes notable international individuals whose contributions promote peace, freedom, and lasting influence in global affairs.
President Mahama credited his commitment to global peace and development to the enduring legacy of Africa’s great leaders, including Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Nelson Mandela, and Kenneth Kaunda, in the statement he made on Jubilee House’s Facebook page.
Established in 1949, the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia is one of the oldest international affairs organizations in the United States, committed to promoting citizen conversation on global topics. Former winners of the International Statesperson Award, which honors leaders from around the world for their leadership in the international arena, include heads of state and government.
President Mahama’s acknowledgement puts him in an exclusive group of world leaders who have been recognized for their efforts in diplomacy, governance, and international collaboration.
