The United Nations resolution deeming the trafficking of enslaved Africans and racialized chattel slavery the worst crime against humanity was welcomed by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat.
The United Nations General Assembly passed the resolution on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, under Ghana’s leadership, which the Commission referred to as a watershed moment in the worldwide acknowledgment of the historical injustices of slavery and their lasting effects.
President John Dramani Mahama’s leadership on the project was praised by the Chairperson, who said it represents Africa’s long-standing demand for complete recognition of the transatlantic slave trade.
“This historic decision marks an important step towards truth, justice, and healing, and reinforces the urgent need to address the enduring legacy of slavery,” H.E. Mahamat stated.
The Commission reaffirmed the African Union’s stance that the historical and present consequences of slavery must be completely acknowledged, including the pursuit of restorative justice in accordance with Agenda 2063 and relevant Assembly judgments.
Additionally, it stated that the African Union would continue to collaborate with the United Nations, member states, and foreign partners to promote historical justice and make sure that these atrocities are never forgotten or committed again.
