After entering a guilty plea to offensive conduct and the sharing of fake news, TikToker Camilla Alhassan was given a one-year jail sentence by the Accra Circuit Court.
Camilla Alhassan pleaded guilty to publishing videos on Thursday, July 16, that, without proof, wrongly alleged President John Dramani Mahama buried 32 cattle as part of a ritual to win the 2024 general election, and she was given a sentence.
Her lawyer, Kwadwo Gyamfi Bonsu, spoke after the decision and stated that the court dismissed the accusation of electronic abuse, ruling that it lacked the legal power to decide that offense.
However, the court sentenced Camilla to a year in jail after finding her guilty of offensive behavior.
The defence sought a lesser punishment, according to the lawyer, but the court said that the increasing incidence of such offences necessitated a sentence that would deter similar behaviour.
She was detained and sued by the Ghana Police Service as a result of the videos that were extensively shared. During a prior hearing, the court had mandated a pregnancy test before sentencing.
