The Greater Accra leadership of the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has reiterated its backing for the three teacher unions’ declared nationwide strike.
Therefore, the unions have told instructors to stay away from work, emphasizing that the strike will continue until the outstanding issues they have with the government are resolved.
Speaking at a combined press briefing at the Greater Accra Regional Secretariat of the GNAT, Cosmos Ennu Kwaw, the Regional Secretary of the GNAT, claimed the action had become essential since the government had not adequately resolved significant issues influencing teachers.
According to him, the pressing concerns are the automatic placement of educators who have passed promotion exams, the finalization of discussions for a new collective agreement, and the implementation of a 20% allowance for disadvantaged areas.
“Teachers who passed the required promotion exams should, in accordance with established practice, be promptly placed at their individual salary levels.”
According to Mr. Kwaw, the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service, and the teacher unions’ agreement, which was signed on August 31, 2026, must be carried out without change or conditions.
He additionally pushed for the parties participating in discussions for a new collective agreement to show commitment and speed up the process to ensure its completion.
Meanwhile, the Greater Accra leadership has warned instructors against returning to the classroom early, stating that any further strike instructions will be given through the unions’ official channels.
The nationwide strike was declared by GNAT, NAGRAT, and PRETAG on September 25, 2026, due to unresolved issues with teachers’ terms of service, promotion, and deprived area allowances.
