Dr. Joseph Kwaku Asamoah and Emelia Afi Agbenyo have been appointed Deputy Chairpersons of the Electoral Commission (EC) by President John Dramani Mahama.
The departure of two past deputy chairmen resulted in leadership vacancies in the Commission, which are now filled by these nominations.
President Mahama appealed for “fairness, moderation, and devotion to the law” throughout the ceremony at Jubilee House on Monday.
“I don’t anticipate any preferential treatment from the electoral body for myself, my party, or my administration as president. I anticipate an organization that upholds the same standards for everyone and defends Ghanaians’ freedom to choose their own leaders,” he continued.

Dr Bossman Eric Asare, the Head of Corporate Affairs, resigned on July 31, 2026, to return to academia at the University of Ghana. Samuel Tettey, who was the head of Operations, likewise resigned from the Commission after hitting the required retirement age.
Dr Asamoah works as a lecturer at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and is a chartered accountant and lawyer. With over 17 years of experience in electoral administration, public service, legal practice, and academia, he is a seasoned professional.
He previously held a number of positions at the European Commission, including Head of Audit, Director of the Training Center, and Director of Finance, before his appointment. Additionally, he took part in the management of multiple electoral exercises, such as the 2012 and 2016 general elections.
The appointments come as the Commission continues its work in managing Ghana’s electoral processes and preparations for future elections.
