The swift response of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) personnel extinguished a fire which had started at shop F2230 on the first floor of the Kumasi New Kejetia Market from spreading to more than 30 neighboring shops.

The GNFS prevented millions of cedis of merchandise from being destroyed. Personnel numbering nine and led by Station Officer I Maxwell Partey arrived at the scene of the outbreak within two minutes of receiving a distress call and observed a visible build up of smoke in the impacted shop according to a GNFS statement.

Fire officers made prompt use of portable extinguishers and the market’s hose reel in successfully containing the blaze which was ultimately extinguished around 09:00 am after breaking it out 08:48 am.

The store that got burned lost two hundred and fifty boxes of matches, nail polishes chemicals, ten deodorants to smoke exposure. Early investigations suggest that the cause was the spontaneous reaction of stored flammable chemicals that combined with the burning materials within an unventilated area.

No casualties were reported.
