As part of an ongoing investigation, the High Court has given the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) permission to detain Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South.
Additionally, the court gave EOCO the power to search for and take control of any paperwork that is thought to be pertinent to the inquiry. Nonetheless, the court ordered the Speaker of Parliament to carry out the arrest on behalf of EOCO.
EOCO had requested the orders after informing the court that attempts to get the MP to come voluntarily had failed.
The Office additionally voiced worry that papers pertaining to the inquiry could be hidden, changed, or destroyed if the requested orders were not given.
The recent occurrence occurred after a fight on September 23 at the Accra High Court, when EOCO officers tried to apprehend Mr. Baffour Awuah.
EOCO subsequently clarified that the tried arrest was related to an investigation for which the MP had been asked twice in February 2026.
Nevertheless, Mr. Baffour Awuah has disputed EOCO’s interpretation of the incident.
He claims the inquiry involves SIC Life Savings and Loans Company, which had previously hired his former legal firm, Sarkodie Baffour Awuah & Partners.
He claimed that after receiving EOCO’s invitation in February, he referred the matter to the Clerk to Parliament, who then sent a representative from his previous company to appear before EOCO investigators on March 4, March 18, and April 30.
According to him, the representative provided the information that the detectives requested, as well as a written statement.
The inquiry is connected to financial dealings involving Equity Savings and Loans and SIC Life Savings and Loans.
SIC Life Savings and Loans hired Mr. Baffour Awuah’s prior legal company to recover the nearly GH¢3.5 million it had invested with Equity Savings and Loans, he said.
The investment, which included accumulated interest, eventually grew to over GH¢14 million before the parties reached a negotiated settlement, according to him.
The specifics or extent of the investigation have not been made public by the EOCO.
In connection with the inquiry, the Office has the legal authority to arrest the MP and carry out searches and seizures thanks to the court’s most recent order.
