John Dramani Mahama, the president of Ghana, has pleaded with fans and anybody else wishing to travel to North America for the 2026 World Cup to come back after the competition.
There have been instances of Ghanaians attending sporting competitions abroad and taking advantage of the occasion to extend their visa stay.
The 2026 World Cup, which will be held in Mexico, the United States, and Canada, is not expected to have the same outcome as prior tournaments, according to Mahama.

In his State of the Nation address on the floor of Parliament on Friday, February 27, he described the nation’s attempts to make sure that the US put its embargo on several African nations.
“People wishing to attend and support the team, as well as others who are interested, will have to apply for visas at the American Embassy,” he stated.
“We are being told that we must make certain that fans who attend [the tournament] return on the visas. Getting Ghana off the ban list and regaining our five-year non-immigrant visas has been a lot of effort.
“I hope the World Cup does not see thousands of Ghanaians travel to America, refuse to return, and push us back onto the travel ban list.”
For the World Cup, where they will face Panama, England, and Croatia, Bryant University will serve as the Black Stars’ base camp training facility.
