Ghana will compete in the U-17 World Cup in 2026 after defeating Senegal in a stunning win at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday, July 11.
After 180 minutes, the Black Maidens defeated the Senegalese team 7-6 on penalties after a 2-2 aggregate draw.
Last week, the first leg resulted in a 1-1 stalemate between the two teams, leaving the reverse match open.
Although the visiting team in Accra scored first in the first 10 minutes of the game, Joe Nana Adarkwa’s team persisted in fighting for the equalizer.
They had to wait until the closing minutes of the first half to tie the score with Seidatu Wahab, who pushed her way past two players before letting loose a drive that beat the goalkeeper to make it 1-1 just before the break.
After the interval, Ghana kept up their pressure in search of a winner, but the Senegalese defense stood strong, thwarting every attempt.
The score remained 1-1 at the 90-minute mark, forcing the game into extra time.
Anita Yeboah was the only player to miss any of the Maidens’ eight penalty shots, as they scored seven of them. Senegal, however, failed to qualify since they missed two of their eight penalties.
The Maidens’ qualification for the competition marks their return to the international arena for the first time since being banned in 2022 and missing the previous two editions.
