The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Constitution Amendment Committee chairman, Frank Davies, said the suggested modifications to the party’s constitution were important measures to improve its organizational framework in advance of the 2028 general elections.
During the NPP’s National Delegates Congress and Officers’ elections on Saturday, October 3, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, Frank Davies stated that the suggested revisions were made to close loopholes found following the party’s prior constitutional evaluation.
He claimed that the amendments were required after specific omissions and areas that were not adequately handled in the previous constitutional amendment process were found.
He stated that as a result, the proposals presented to delegates were intended to fill those holes and place the party in a more advantageous organizational position in preparation for the next general election.
“The last modification we had in 2025 heralded some acts of omission and commission, which required these limited constitutional modifications; thus, this is to address the grey areas that we neglected.” Thus, a select number of amendments will be presented to the delegates today. These amendments are crucial and will help the party be better prepared for the 2028 elections.
“Due to the ramifications for our party’s organizational structure, these changes must be implemented.”
The proposed modifications are a part of the NPP’s National Delegates Congress’ first phase, which is taking place concurrently with the selection of national officers.
One of the most notable recommendations relates to the selection of the party’s leader.
The NPP included a clause at its meeting on January 31 stating that the National Chairman would serve as the party’s leader at all relevant times. Nevertheless, the party is attempting to change that rule under the most recent proposal in order to declare the NPP’s flagbearer the party leader.
Another crucial recommendation relates to how the party’s Vice Chairpersons are chosen.
The first, second, and third vice chairpersons are decided in accordance with the order of votes received, with candidates running for the position of National First Vice Chairman under the current system.
The amendment that has been put forth would alter that arrangement by mandating that applicants declare and compete for certain Vice Chairperson positions rather than battling for a single role and being ranked according to the number of votes they received.
