Ghana lost their second straight game in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers as Gambia rallied from behind to defeat them 4-2 at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Before Gambia scored four goals to stage the comeback, Ernest Nuamah and Felix Afena-Gyan had given the Black Stars the lead.
After 19 minutes, the visitors had the only shot on goal, indicating that Ghana had difficulty generating opportunities in the first few minutes.
Four minutes later, Nuamah found Felix Afena-Gyan, whose attempt resulted in a corner, as the Black Stars eventually established their rhythm and created their first significant opportunity.
Jerome Opoku, a defender, was challenged during the subsequent set-piece, which was determined to be a foul, resulting in a penalty.
Nuamah converted his penalty into the bottom-right corner in the 27th minute, giving Ghana the lead.
Ghana extended their lead five minutes later when Afena-Gyan scored from a free kick.
However, Gambia responded quickly two minutes after Ghana’s second goal when captain Gideon Mensah conceded a penalty, allowing Mohammed Badamosi to cut the deficit from the spot.
Gambia continued to gain strength and tied the game four minutes before halftime.
Ghana’s defence were unable to get the ball away from a throw-in, allowing Omar Colley to score and make it 2-2.
Ebrima Colley scored a loose ball in the 68th minute, after the Ghana defense failed to handle the danger once more, completing the comeback for the guests.
Before Colley seized the chance to put Gambia ahead, Mensah, who had previously conceded the penalty, was unable to clear the loose ball.
Gambia’s fourth goal of the game and Colley’s second helped them clinch the win in injury time.
After losing both of their opening two Group C games, Ghana’s qualification chances are still up in the air.
When they play Somalia in November, the Black Stars will have a second chance to turn things around.
