Through the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Special Operations Team (SOT), the Ghana Police Service has stepped up intelligence-led activities throughout Kumasi, its environs, and the Atwima Nwabiagya Municipality in the Ashanti Region. As a result, 93 individuals, including those thought to be involved in the trafficking and distribution of illicit narcotic chemicals, have been apprehended.
The joint operations, conducted between July 15 and 24, 2026, were part of continuous efforts to fight illegal drug trafficking, break down organized criminal networks, and improve public safety.
The activity, which targeted identified criminal hideouts and suspected drug trafficking hubs, covered Afari, Nkawie, Ntobroso, Ahodwo, Ampabame, Atonsu Ahensan, Atonsu Gyinyase, “Thinker” at Alabar, Asokore Mampong, Sawaba Adinyase, Buobai, Atimatim, Kronum, and Sawaba.
During the operations, police detained 35 women and 58 males.
Preliminary research shows that 28 of the suspects are Nigerians, while 65 are Ghanaians.
Nurudeen Gafaru, 28; Abdul Gafaru, 29; Iddrisu Alhassan, also known as “Tagor,” 33; Akwasi Afriyie, 27; and Prince Chidera Okekelawe, 25, a Nigerian citizen, are among the suspects.
Recovered items include 40 compressed parcels of presumed narcotic drugs, each weighing around one kilogram; quantities of Tramadol (120mg, 225mg, and 250mg), ecstasy, wraps of presumed cocaine; dried leaves suspected of containing narcotics; locally made toffees and drinks that are thought to be infused with narcotics; materials for processing drugs; an unlicensed red motorcycle; and expired and unlicensed pharmaceutical goods.
At one location, investigations also revealed possible commercial sexual exploitation activities.
According to the police, more investigation is ongoing to identify any ties to organized exploitation networks, human trafficking, and offenses involving immigration.
All 93 suspects and the recovered evidence are still in police custody as the investigations and legal processes move forward.
