On Friday, some sections of major roads around the seat of government in Accra will be temporarily closed to motorists to allow events commemorating Ghana’s 69th Independence Anniversary, which will cause traffic congestion.
The Ghana Police Service has announced that the limitations will begin on March 6, 2026, in conjunction with the national event that is scheduled to take place at the Jubilee House.
According to a police statement, traffic will be restricted on some major routes during the ceremony and will be allowed to resume after it.
“The Ghana Police Service would like to inform the general public, particularly motorists, that some Accra roads will be temporarily closed on Friday, March 6, 2026, in conjunction with the 69th Independence Anniversary Celebration to be held at the Jubilee House on that day,” the statement stated.
According to the police, the affected streets include Liberation Road from the Opeibea Junction to the Central Business District, Independence Avenue at the Ako Adjei By-pass, and Jawaharlal Nehru Road.
According to the authorities, the closures are necessary in order to ensure security measures and the smooth passage of official convoys across the country during the national event.
Drivers on Liberation Road have been instructed to turn onto Kaokudi Road through the Kanda Highway in order to access Barnes Road in the direction of the Central Business District or to use Giffard Road in the direction of Osu.
Drivers heading towards Independence Avenue will also be diverted via the Kanda Highway to Ring Road Central before continuing to the 37 Junction and other sites.
To avoid unnecessary delays, the police advised motorists to use the prescribed alternative routes and prepare their journeys in advance.
“Additionally, the Police urge motorists to plan their trips in advance and use alternative routes when possible,” the announcement went on.
The festival’s security measures will include a ban on parking or stopping cars in restricted areas, as well as stringent parking enforcement throughout the affected roadways.
The police stated that traffic officers will be stationed at important areas to direct motorists and ensure a smooth traffic flow, and that towing vehicles will be on standby to tow any abandoned, broken-down, or illegally parked vehicles that may be obstructing traffic.
VIP and security vehicles will only be allowed entry after successfully completing the necessary security checks.
The police, as a consequence, requested the public to help on-duty officers manage traffic effectively during the Independence Day celebrations.
