According to the Minister for Government Communications, the Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, will speak to the nation on Thursday, February 12, to discuss new policies that Cabinet has approved to address challenges in the cocoa sector.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu informed the media following an emergency Cabinet meeting that the Finance Minister would present a comprehensive account of the measures taken to restore the sector and expedite payments to farmers.
As decided upon at the end of today’s Cabinet meeting, the Finance Minister will address the Ghanaian public tomorrow at 11 a.m. and unveil these sweeping measures, he said.
The urgent Cabinet meeting was called to address growing problems in the cocoa industry, such as payment delays to farmers and financial difficulties facing the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD).
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu said that the meeting was all about coming up with answers.
“The meeting wouldn’t have occurred if it weren’t intended to address the difficulties we are now facing,” he said.
He said that the government had taken decisive steps to deal with the difficulties confronting the cocoa sector.
The lengthy conversation in the Cabinet came to a close lately. The meeting addressed potential problems in the cocoa sector.
“And at the conclusion of the emergency session, decisive measures have been agreed upon regarding expedited payment of cocoa farmers, regarding the implementation of the most drastic reforms in the cocoa sector with a view to achieving quantum leaps in domestic processing of cocoa as opposed to exports of raw materials,” he said.
