Serwaa Alice, a 19-year-old pregnant woman, is fighting for her life at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital after being shot and losing her eight-month-old pregnancy.
The victim was said to have been struck by stray bullets around 9 p.m. on Thursday, March 12, while a party was headed to Shiawu Besiase in the Atwima South Constituency of the Ashanti Region to bury a queen mother. According to reports, there was an altercation that resulted in the exchange of gunfire.
In addition to the pregnant woman, a 14-year-old girl was said to have been hit in the eye by a stray bullet and is now being treated at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
The Assembly Member for the Shiawu Besiase Electoral Area, Nana Osei Tutu, said in an interview with the media that numerous other individuals had machete injuries in addition to the two women who had gunshot wounds.
He indicated that the incident may have been the result of a protracted land dispute between two chiefs in the area.
In order to help restore calm in the neighborhood, he said, the incident has since been reported to the police.
The guns were being fired by individuals who were dressed in soldier camouflage and had their faces hidden. A pregnant woman was struck in the stomach.
“The bullets passed through from the right and exited on the left. The doctor informed me that the kid inside her womb has passed away. The woman is also in a life-threatening state and will have surgery soon.
Additionally, a bullet struck a young girl in the eye. The physicians are hoping that they can rescue the eye, he said.
